I am pleased to announce that I’ve taken a position in Kevin Scott’s CTO office at Microsoft1. This year has seen some of the people I most admire go to work for Kevin (looking at you, Guha and Walt..) and it prompted a discussion if going to work full time in his group was right for me and Microsoft. There isn’t much to say beyond that, as it’s still quite early days, but I’m cautiously optimistic on what I’ll be able to do working for Kevin and Dee alongside old friends.
I want to thank everyone who took the time to speak with me about what it is (or was) like working for the modern Microsoft, Github, LinkedIn, etc… The last few months while I weighed my options have been filled with some very fun conversations! I’ve been meeting new folks and re-connecting with old friends and colleagues, and I’m grateful that you took the time to speak with me.
I missed a bunch of you, though, for sure. This was an unusually busy2 three months during which I spent time in Madrid with kid #1 before she heads off for her graduate school, saw friends and colleagues in London, New York and Boston, got covid (third times the charm?), went to Sci Foo3 and bookended Open Sauce in the Bay Area and dropped off both kids on opposite coasts for their university programs…
I managed to fit all that in while speaking with dozens of current and ex Microsoft employees. Trying to figure out what the role looks like, etc. while juggling time zones!
Regardless, thanks again to those that took the time to speak with me. For those of you I missed, I’ll find you soon!4
I considered making this a link to Microsoft, but you know…at this point it would seem kinda obvious…. alright alright, how about I link to a product I’ve found neat: Microsoft.
I’d say it was like the scene in Goodfellas where Henry Hill is being followed by the helicopter while balancing all sorts of tasks, except without all the criminality. Maybe I should re-orient on that Gossip Girl episode where everything is happening at once “The treasure of the serena madre” that Princess Donut refers to? I don’t think my readers want me to go down a Dungeon Crawler Carl fan hole again…
Thanks for hosting me, Cat!
I was trying to keep things mum while simultaneously accumulating the most information possible. Which are actually mutually exclusive goals now that I think of it…
